Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood perhaps from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't reported till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a much wider area than merely the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming years and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that has seen improved development in modern times.
