Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coins picked up nearby offer evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created a market during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a far larger area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not put on before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the following generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town that has seen improved development in the past few decades.
