Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage found nearby show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were living in the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a much bigger area than merely the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the following generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
