Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, when the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune existing then is not observed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far larger area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be applied till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
