Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins uncovered nearby offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, ran through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the area very likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not reported until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a way larger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name may very well have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a number of tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few decades.
