Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a historic past extending back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found very close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market in about the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the locale in all probability since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a much bigger area than just the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be put on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow.
