Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins found in the area show proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered mean that they were settling the neighbourhood more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a considerably wider area than merely the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't included till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the succeeding decades and the development of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the last few years.
