Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage stumbled on near by show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place during the tenth century, and relics found show that they were living in the area almost certainly since the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially greater area than just the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the following decades and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town which has seen increased development in the recent past.
