Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were settling the vicinity very likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't observed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a significantly larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the succeeding years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
