Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins found in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were settling the neighbourhood in all probability from the 6th Century. The village existing then wasn't mentioned until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a substantially greater area than just the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be applied prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing over the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a busy market town which has seen greater development in the past several years.
