Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found close to the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage discovered near by show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place during the 10th Century, and relics uncovered reveal that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not reported till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name may perhaps have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be included up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow.
