Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the area perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as such was not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably larger area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the succeeding decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and develop.
