Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled on near by offer proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood almost certainly from the sixth century. The village existing at that time wasn't referred to till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a far bigger area than just the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in the past few years.
