Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is located near the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins picked up nearby offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found suggest that they were residing in the region more than likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not listed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a significantly greater area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be inserted till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in recent times.
