Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins found in the area offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were settling the region in all probability from the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't mentioned until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a way greater area compared to the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't added prior to the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few decades.
