Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a history harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity give proof of this. The old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who created a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were residing in the area almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then wasn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a considerably wider area than just the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in the last few years.
