Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a history harping back to the Roman era, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the local area most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far larger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a thriving market town which has witnessed improved development in recent years.
