Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled on in the area show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were residing in the area probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was is not cited till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a much larger area than only the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even larger through the following generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
