Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is located close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins picked up in the area show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts found mean that they were settling the vicinity almost certainly from the sixth century. The settlement as such was not observed until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a considerably wider area than only the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name could perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the coming decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
