Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman times, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it sits near the Chilterns and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't documented till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not included before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town which has seen increased development in the last few years.
