Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history going back to Roman times, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins found near by give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities picked up show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood possibly since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a lot wider area than simply the town itself, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get appended before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the coming decades and the development of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's witnessed increased development in the last few years.
