Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage found in close proximity give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were living in the neighbourhood probably since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a much wider area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen improved development in the past several years.
