Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past stretching back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon near by show proof of this. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered indicate that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely since the sixth century. The village as such was not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a considerably greater area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in the past several years.
