Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities found show that they were settling the local area almost certainly from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a substantially bigger area compared to the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may very well have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town that's seen increased development in the recent past.
