Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands near the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were residing in the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't observed until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embodied a way bigger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be put on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that's seen improved development in the recent past.
