Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historic past harping back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins uncovered in the area show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market in around the tenth century, and relics picked up imply that they were settling the locale probably since the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't reported till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a way wider area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the coming generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the recent past.
