Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated near the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered denote that they were settling the area undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement as such wasn't described until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a way wider area than just the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
