Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county boundary betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on in the area offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the region possibly since the sixth century. The village as it was was not referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a substantially bigger area than just the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the following years and the development of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed accelerated development in current times.
