Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered near by give proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were dwelling in the locale in all probability from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't observed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly larger area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
