Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historical past going back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled on in the area show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were living in the neighbourhood more than likely since the sixth century. The commune as such wasn't cited until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand.
