Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the border in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins uncovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon show that they were staying in the region quite likely from the 6th Century. The commune existing at that time isn't referred to till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a lot wider area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a bustling market town that's witnessed greater development in recent times.
