Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits very close to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby offer proof of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and relics discovered mean that they were inhabiting the region probably from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a way bigger area than only the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could quite possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be included up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the succeeding years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
