Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found suggest that they were living in the local area probably from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a significantly wider area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get applied until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the succeeding generations and the establishing of of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen increased development in current times.
