Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it stands near the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered near by show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who introduced a market during the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were dwelling in the vicinity more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing then isn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a way greater area than just the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not inserted up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming years and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
