Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies near the Chiltern Hills and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts found show that they were living in the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time was not referred to till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a far wider area than just the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow.
