The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins unearthed in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the region possibly since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't cited till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a lot bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name could possibly have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't inserted till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the coming years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow.
