Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created a market in around the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the local area undoubtedly since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way wider area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town could have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding through the coming decades and the construction of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
