Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to Roman times, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it can be found near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage discovered in close proximity show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the locale in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a much wider area than merely the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing over the following generations and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a busy market town which has seen increased development in the past few decades.
