Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman period, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon nearby show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place in about the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not described till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a significantly bigger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
