Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman period, at which time the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early relics and coins discovered nearby offer proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were settling the locale most likely since the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not described until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a way bigger area than simply the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
