Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins picked up nearby show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood probably since the 6th Century. The village existing at that time is not discussed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a significantly wider area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the ensuing years and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
