The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the locale most probably from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time isn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially wider area compared to the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be applied till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
