Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins stumbled on nearby offer proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed indicate that they were living in the local area perhaps since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time is not discussed until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, comprised a much greater area compared to the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the succeeding years and the establishing of of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed greater development in the past few years.
