Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county boundary in between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were residing in the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The commune as it was is not cited until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a far bigger area than merely the town itself, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following years and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
