Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits very near to the boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage found in the area give evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were settling the local area very likely from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not discussed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a lot larger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the following years and the building of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
