Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old relics and coins unearthed in close proximity give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and relics unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the area most probably from the 6th Century. The village as it was is not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a significantly larger area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put on till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the following generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and expand. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's seen greater development in modern times.
