Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were staying in the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't remarked upon until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a much bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the ensuing decades and the construction of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town develop and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has seen greater development in recent times.
