Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were inhabiting the region perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a lot greater area than merely the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part did not get put in prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the building of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop.
