Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands near to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins unearthed near by show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place in around the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were residing in the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then is not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, encompassed a substantially greater area than just the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the ensuing generations and the building of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that's seen accelerated development in the past few years.
