Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chilterns and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage picked up near by show proof of this. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were living in the region in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not documented till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a lot larger area compared to the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the ensuing generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
