Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage found in the area give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered reveal that they were living in the region in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at this time wasn't discussed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way larger area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name will have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be applied before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop.
