Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lays near to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics found suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as such is not observed till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way larger area than merely the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway line and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in recent times.
