Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in the area offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics picked up show that they were living in the locale possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't described till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a considerably larger area than just the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't appended until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the ensuing generations and the construction of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
