Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered suggest that they were settling the region most probably since the sixth century. The village as it was is not described until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a way wider area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added on until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a flourishing market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past several years.
