Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chilterns and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the area most likely since the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a much greater area than simply the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not put on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).
