Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage found nearby give proof of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts found indicate that they were staying in the local area most likely since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not referred to until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a significantly larger area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
