Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, ancient artifacts and coinage picked up near by offer evidence of this fact. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered indicate that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not cited until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much bigger area than just the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the coming years and the appearance of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in the past several years.
