Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic relics and coins discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created a market in about the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon indicate that they were dwelling in the region probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not cited till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a way larger area than merely the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger during the succeeding decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has seen greater development in the recent past.
