Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area show proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts found show that they were settling the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The village as such isn't described until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a far greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
