Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historical past harping back to Roman times, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market in about the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were settling the area most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a much wider area than simply the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put in prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the succeeding years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen improved development in the past few years.
