Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins found nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were living in the locale probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then is not referred to till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a way bigger area compared to the town alone, and included the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming years and the coming of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has witnessed improved development in the last few years.
