Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity give proof of this. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed indicate that they were living in the region most probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was then isn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a lot greater area than only the town itself, and included the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't included prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger during the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
