Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in the area offer evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were settling the vicinity probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing then isn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a substantially larger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the coming of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen improved development in the past few decades.
