Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a story harping back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is situated next to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins discovered in the area show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the vicinity almost certainly since the 6th Century. The commune existing then was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a much greater area compared to the town alone, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be inserted until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
