Set within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands close to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity show proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on indicate that they were residing in the vicinity almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village existing then is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, covered a much bigger area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
