Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Based in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around 37,000 and a history extending back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is located very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins found in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in around the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were residing in the region most likely from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not discussed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a much bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
