Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coinage picked up near by offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found mean that they were settling the locale very likely from the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much larger area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't put on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing generations and the construction of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
