Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old relics and coinage stumbled upon in the area show evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in about the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were inhabiting the local area quite likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such was not mentioned until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a substantially greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wasn't added on prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the succeeding decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in the past few decades.
