Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman period, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is found near the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coins found in the area show proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all probability since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not listed until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a way larger area than just the town by itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be appended up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding during the following decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town which has seen greater development in modern times.
