Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage unearthed nearby offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, went through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The settlement existing then wasn't observed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a considerably wider area than only the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
