Set in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story extending back to the Roman period, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts unearthed suggest that they were settling the region perhaps from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't discussed till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a lot greater area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name could very well have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put in till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the following years and the development of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town that's seen greater development in the past few decades.
