Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is very close to the county boundary in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage stumbled upon in close proximity offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were living in the neighbourhood most likely since the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a way bigger area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the coming of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
