Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history stretching back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there had been settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage unearthed near by show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market during the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up show that they were residing in the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The village as such was not reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a way bigger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be applied till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the following years and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed greater development in current times.
