Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lays near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in close proximity offer proof of this. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood more than likely from the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not discussed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a way wider area compared to the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the following years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen greater development in the past few decades.
