The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a much bigger area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get included up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
