Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is found next to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins found nearby show proof of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics found reveal that they were staying in the neighbourhood quite likely from the sixth century. The commune as such isn't observed until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a substantially larger area than only the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not applied prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing through the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that has seen greater development in the recent past.
