Set in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around 37,000 and a past going back to Roman days, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The historic Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who created the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were residing in the vicinity very likely since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embraced a considerably greater area than merely the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get put on prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town which has seen increased development in recent years.
