Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is located near the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins picked up near by show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found imply that they were settling the neighbourhood most probably from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time is not described till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a substantially larger area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop.
