Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts picked up show that they were settling the area possibly since the sixth century. The commune existing at that time was not listed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get inserted before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the coming years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that has seen greater development in recent years.
