Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered show that they were residing in the vicinity very likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably wider area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put in until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).
