Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a past stretching back to the era of the Romans, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage picked up in close proximity show proof of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were settling the region possibly from the 6th Century. The village as it was wasn't documented until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a much wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put in up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town that has seen accelerated development in recent years.
