Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman period, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coinage found in the area offer proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (built by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't discussed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far wider area than simply the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that's witnessed improved development in the recent past.
