Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the border betwixt Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to the Roman era, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who used a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts found show that they were residing in the area possibly from the sixth century. The commune as such is not referred to until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a substantially bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's seen accelerated development in the past few years.
