Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there had been settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage picked up in close proximity give proof of this. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered indicate that they were inhabiting the locale almost certainly since the 6th Century. The village as such was not cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a significantly bigger area than just the town alone, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be included prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow through the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
