Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the border in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins found in the area give proof of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now called the A5, went through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered suggest that they were staying in the locale most probably since the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a much larger area than merely the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not applied up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the succeeding years and the development of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow.
