The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old relics and coinage discovered nearby give evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the locale quite likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a considerably larger area than merely the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to numerous tenants over the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen greater development in the past few years.
