Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a story going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage found nearby give proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were settling the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a significantly greater area compared to the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put in until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing during the ensuing decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a bustling market town which has seen accelerated development in recent years.
