Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the days of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage found nearby show evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using a market during the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were settling the region quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at that time was not remarked upon till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a considerably wider area than only the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not inserted prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town which has seen greater development in modern times.
