Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past extending back to Roman times, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the nearby town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it is found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the region possibly from the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not referred to until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a far larger area than only the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be included before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
