Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lays next to the Chilterns and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage found near by offer proof of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who were using a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were staying in the area more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, covered a far greater area compared to the town itself, and comprised the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't inserted up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the following decades and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen accelerated development in modern times.
