Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard sits near the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a history extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies next to the Chilterns and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found nearby give evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon suggest that they were residing in the vicinity perhaps from the sixth century. The commune as it was is not cited till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a considerably larger area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get included before the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the ensuing generations and the building of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
