Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there existed settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins uncovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were staying in the locale very likely since the sixth century. The settlement as it was wasn't listed till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a far greater area than simply the town alone, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be applied till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding years and the building of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed improved development in modern times.
