Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is near the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage extending back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The age old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, ran through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The village existing then is not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a considerably larger area compared to the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be added on till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the following years and the development of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
