The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a lot wider area compared to the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wasn't put on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).
