Found in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historical past stretching back to Roman times, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the nearby town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located near to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts uncovered show that they were settling the vicinity most probably from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time isn't reported until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a way wider area than simply the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be added on before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding during the coming generations and the development of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a booming market town which has seen accelerated development in the past several years.
