Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, early relics and coins found near by show proof of this. The age old Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon denote that they were inhabiting the region most likely since the sixth century. The settlement as such isn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a way larger area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not put on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it desirable to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to various tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
