Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about mid-way between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it stands very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old relics and coins stumbled on nearby show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the local area perhaps since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then isn't referred to till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a substantially larger area than simply the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get applied prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following generations and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that has seen increased development in current times.
